Mp3’s are a type of compressed audio format, but one with high fidelity and quality.  VGTunes uses the Mp3’s because we can take the music directly out of the games so you can listen to it how it’s supposed to sound.

MIDI’s are a recording format much different than Mp3’s.  MIDI’s are typically synthesized, or created using electronic or digital keyboards, and therefore do not have the same sound as the original piece of music.
